SLOW DRiP - Synopsis

When a beautiful and highly-intuitive small town police detective is presented with a third related murder, she tries to follow conventional police procedure, while the teenage boy who discovered the body possesses clues of his own that may lead directly to the serial killer, a mysterious figure with seemingly advanced medical knowledge, who enjoys torturing his victims in a particular cruel and sick manner.  Clues and taunts left by the killer, along with the knowledge held by the teenager, cause the three characters to intersect in a dangerous game of cat and mouse.

The following is an official review of "Slow Drip" by Gary Polisano.

📷4 out of 4 stars-  Share This Review

Slow Drip by Gary Polisano is a C/T/M/H novel that narrates gruesome murders which shock a small town. The clues that point detectives in the killer's direction come from an unlikely source.  Enroute to their favorite fishing spot, Jeff and Ells stumble upon a decomposing body. The ugly scene terrorizes their young minds and has an unexplainable effect on Jeff. In his dreams, he sees the dead woman and even talks to her.

Meanwhile, detective Tina Patterson tries to unravel the mystery and gives the case the attention it deserves. Although her superior doubts her methods, she is willing to do whatever it takes to solve the case.  The author blends reality with the supernatural, and I like that it is believable. He portrays Jeff as a brave teenager who is taken aback by the changes he is experiencing. It doesn't help that the people around him are as skeptical as he is.

The other characters are also well developed and play distinct roles. I was intrigued by the killer's thought process, and I hoped that the detectives would catch up with him. I applaud the author for revealing his identity at the opportune moment, neither too early nor too late into the story.  The story contains some medical jargon, which helped to expand my vocabulary. It is well researched and vividly describes the human anatomy.

The author highlights the consequences of holding a grudge, which is what motivated the killer to carry out his revenge mission. I was intrigued when the author also highlighted incompetence in the workplace. In the medical field, a minor error could cost a life. Family dynamics also came into play. Jeff had a strong support system consisting of parents who cared for him, friends who valued him, and teachers who wanted the best for him.

What I liked most about the book is that it has two plots running concurrently, which intertwined to create a neat ending. At first, I didn't see how the story of a sixteen-year-old boy who loves baseball would blend with that of a murder investigation. I was relieved that it made sense as I read further. The author also presents the story in the form of journal entries, and each chapter narrates a different day's activities. That helped put events into perspective.

This book is the first installment in a series, and I hope the rest are just as enthralling.  There is nothing I disliked about this book.  I will, therefore, award this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars and recommend it to lovers of crime and thriller stories. People who can't stomach gory scenes, however, should stay away from this book.

Slow Drip by Gary Polisano is well named: that title describes the serial killer’s methodology, right from how he selects his victims to how he kills them. It also captures Polisano’s style: a slow drip of information following a block-buster opening chapter that shows the killer doing his ugly deed on a beautiful 24-year-old blonde.

The pace slows in the following chapters as Polisano introduces a key character in this thriller; young baseball star hopeful, Jeff Cronin. Not every reader will be patient watching two high school teams competing, but wait for it! Jeff is critical to helping the police identify the killer, so curb any impatience and Polisano will ever so subtly build the tension inside you until it explodes in the final chapters.

The serial killer, who remains nameless till close to the end, is one nasty, deranged and deeply tormented soul who is hell-bent on succeeding in his deadly mission. His focus is always on beautiful young women whom he sees as whores. Is his mission sexually oriented? If not, what drives him? This is what gifted detective Tina Patterson is trying to find out. Victims are piling up as the killer moves toward his target of killing 10 women. He stalks them, plans meticulously, eluding and baffling Tina and her associates.

When young Jeff, one of 2 boys who stumbled across victim #3, informs Tina that he got a glimpse of the killer “in his dreams”, can Tina put any credence in such a ridiculous clue? Does she? Gary Polisano is a good writer who is as meticulous in providing details as this killer is in capturing and killing his victims. Polisano’s characters are realistic and readers will identify with the love of the families involved and the horror of the victims as they lay dying. The 'slow drip' of blood in the opening becomes a downpour at the end. Incidentally, this book will appeal to teen readers who will relate to young Jeff’s travails on the baseball field and his first attempts at dating, but even more so if they enjoy heart-racing thrillers.

 My Review

I absolutely loved this book. It had so many different elements to it, murder, mystery, and a touch of supernatural. I didn't really know what to expect when I started reading but Gary Polisano is a fantastic author, this is the start of a series and I can't wait to see what the next book has to offer.
It is quite surprising that this is a debut novel, it has such a raw edge to it. I will bet Gary Polisano is going to produce some more great works after this one. He has a real way of setting scenes and building tension. I can't quite put my finger on what made this book so unique, it just had an overall feel to it that made me feel like I was in the story completely.
The murders are grisly and shocking, and it is Tina's job to solve the case. She finds help in the most unlikely of places. Jeff Cronin discovered one of the victims and he is drawn into the investigation. I really liked Jeff, he is a young man who is thrown into a situation that he certainly didn't want to be involved in, however he really wanted to help.
If you have read some of reviews before you may know I love when parts of a story are told from the killers perspective, so this book was right up my street. The killers thoughts and actions are told in a chilling way and helped explain what was going. Slow Drip is an ideal title for this book, you are slowly drip fed information throughout, until everything pieces together in a dramatic conclusion. Obviously I can't say too much more about the plot, other than it was great and I enjoyed it.
If you like your thrillers gritty, edgy, unique and dramatic, Slow Drip is a book you should read. I whizzed through it so quickly and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Occasionally, I come across a book that I don’t want to write a review for because I just want you all to go buy it and start reading it right now! Slow Drip is one of those books. WOW. I am absolutely blown away. Gary Polisano is a gifted writer and I am so impressed.

The characters are incredibly detailed and real. We follow multiple characters. At first, it was slightly jarring to head hop between each character, but I eventually got the hang of it. That’s really my only critique.

What was unique, was getting inside the killer’s head while still not knowing he he was. I loved that. The twists and turns are constant, and I never felt like I knew what was happening. The ending threw me for a loop and I was very satisfied with it.

There is a twist to one of the characters that makes this thriller edge on the paranormal side and it is really cool. Suspension of disbelief is required a bit, but when isn’t that the case in a fictional novel?

I really loved Slow Drip. I am so excited this is the first in a series and I cannot wait for the next! Highly recommended!

This is a thriller with a supernatural edge….

A serial killer is a schedule to adhere to…abducting, torturing and murdering young women……using their femoral artery to exsanguinate them…..

The Detective. Tina Patterson is studying the little evidence they have, their perpetrator is clearly meticulous and leaving very little forensic evidence behind.

But then we meet Jeff Cronin, who has recently made a psychic connection to one of the victims…..Will he be able to help the police with their investigation?

I found this to be a well plotted thriller with a psychic element and a nicely satisfying end…surprisingly this is Gary Polisano’s debut novel… author to watch out for!

Slow Drip by Gary J. Polisano is a wonderfully uncozy murder mystery. Someone is abducting, torturing and murdering young women in the town of Stansbury Valley, and it falls upon Detective Tina Patterson to catch him. Into the action, enter Jeff Cronin, a high school kid with a gift. Or, perhaps, a curse. You see, Jeff happened to discover one of the killer's earlier victims, and now she won't leave him alone. She comes to him in his dreams, desperate to show him the truth, but he'll have to make sense of the visions if he's to have any chance of helping Detective Patterson catch the killer.

In the best tradition of murder mystery/thrillers, Slow Drip not only brings us along on the manhunt, but it also shows us the killer at work. And in both regards, Polisano hits the mark beautifully. The crimes themselves and the subsequent peeks we get into the killer's mind are as disturbing as they are revealing, and Detective Patterson's sometimes-slogging investigation rings entirely true. Such authenticity comes only through believable characters, and there is not a single character in Slow Drip who fails to resonate.

On one side, a meticulous madman intent on exacting revenge. On the other, a brilliant female cop struggling under the command of a misogynist. Stuck in the middle, a confused kid just trying to do what's right. And behind it all, a new author who orchestrates action like a seasoned pro. Nothing overblown, nothing overdone, he simply lays out the story and lets the other three play off one another in perfect measure. Even the killer's victims are fully-rounded. It would have been easy enough to have all of those people who come and go so quickly appear as typical weeping, helpless-victim caricatures, but not once did I think of those poor souls as anything less than real people facing their ghastly final moments. And bonus points to the author, I was particularly pleased that not a single one of those brave, doomed women went gentle into that good night. It was a wholly unnecessary detail, but such things can often be the difference between a good read and an awesome read.
Quite frankly, I was surprised to learn that Slow Drip is Polisano's first book. If he is this good from the start, you can be sure I'll be following his work to see just how great he'll become.

Five big stars for Slow Drip and for Gary J. Polisano!
